The procedure below applies to the installation of IV to stand-alone PCs, only. Click here for instruction how to install in the network environment.
Windows, all versions up to XP (NOT supported in Vista and Windows 7): Run the IV setup file Ivwinst.exe. The IV files will be installed and initialized. The default installation settings were selected for optimal performance. You are therefore advised to install with default settings and not change them.
Important: Multiple anti-virus or anti-malware programs should never run simultaneously in the background as they compete for the same services and are likely to interfere with each other and may hang or crash Windows. Therefore, disable or uninstall other real-time AV before installing IV.
Under XP W2000 and 2003 Server, InVircible must be installed when logged in with ''administrative'' permissions. Otherwise, InVircible won't load when logging as a non-privileged (limited) user due to lack of permissions.
Stopping the XP SP2 nag message 'no antivirus is installed': XP service pack 2 monitors the regular updating of some antivirus program. Since IV doesn't require regular updating, then disable the Windows AV updating monitor as follows: Open the Security Center from Control Panel, press the 'recommendations' button in the 'virus protection' section and check the box labelled 'I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself'
Personal license: First time IV users should skip this paragraph and read the next one. If you reinstall InVircible after having lost your license then this is when to reinstall the personal license from its backup that you were advised to make, when e-mailing it to you.
Trial license: If you install InVircible for the first time and wish to try the software for a limited period of time, then click the link at left and run the IVLICENSE program to install the complimentary trial license. Users that have a valid license should NOT use the time-limited trial one as the latter will overwrite the user license, if attempted.
Initializing Smart Update: Run the Smart Update synch procedure, as described on the linked page, any time you install or reinstall InVircible.
Troubleshooting: The following error may sometimes show when upgrading Windows to XP. The symptom is that InVircible fails to load and XP issues the following error message:
This condition is caused by setting an incorrect compatibility mode for Interceptor. To resolve the problem:
View (open) the C:IV directory with Windows Explorer.
Right-click the icon named Ivi95.exe (the .exe extension may not show in case Explorer isn't set to show the full pathname) and select 'Properties'.
Select the 'Compatibility' tab, and clear the box labeled 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'. Confirm, and close the dialog box.
Installing to Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP from floppies Prepare the InVircible setup floppies by copying the two files downloaded from the web to empty formatted floppies. To start the installation, insert floppy #1 and run Ivsplit.exe from the floppy. The IV setup program will prompt for inserting disk #2 when needed.
Testing the installation: Read here how to test your InVircible installation and verify that Interceptor is functioning properly, and reacts to threats.
Upgrading from Windows 98/Me to XP/W2K: The installation of IV will NOT migrate automatically when upgrading from W98 to XP or W2K. After having installed the new OS, repeat just the installation of IV, with the same default settings asn under W98. There is no need to reinstall the IV license, if you didn't remove it before upgrading.
Installing IV to a dual or multi-boot system: First, setup all your OS and their boot manager. A single set of IV, and license, will serve all the installed versions of Windows. Boot to one of the systems that you wish IV to run under, preferably XP (if XP is one of the installed OS). Setup IV as explained above, and install your personal IV license. Now boot to the next installed Windows version and repeat just the setup of IV. It's important that you use the same default settings for the installation of IV, particularly the installation to C:IV. There is no need to reinstall the license for every OS as the one in C:IV is common to all. The IV settings are specific to each of the installed OS and are stored in the registry of each of the respective OS.
Installing in a network environment InVircible can be installed and upgraded from a server to end-user workstations. Click here for detailed instructions on installing from a Novell or NT server.
Restoring installation defaults: Here is how to restore the installation defaults in case they were messed up:
Download the latest Ivwinst.exe file and save it to your desktop
Uninstall InVircible from the Add/remove applet on Control Panel, or by ''uninstall'' from the InVircible programs group. Do not delete the IV directory or the license!
Restart Windows! This step is mandatory, to complete pending tasks
Reinstall IV from the setup file saved in step 1, using default setup options
Run the Smart Update synch procedure as explained on the linked page
